Why It Happens Here

Most of the housing in this service area went up between 1938 and 1997, with the bulk of it built in the 1960s and 70s across the 26 named communities we work in, from Applewood and West Pleasant View close in to Evergreen and Kittredge further up the hill. Doors from that era are steel sectional panels on steel track, and steel dents. A sliding trash can, a kid's bike, a bumper tap backing out of a sloped driveway - any of it leaves a crease that doesn't pop back out.

The climate here is the other half of it. This is a severe cold band, and panels that took a hard freeze while already cracked from an impact tend to split along that crack line rather than just dent. Steel contracts in the cold, and a weak spot gets weaker. We see this pattern more in winter and early spring than any other time of year - not because panels break more then, but because a crease that happened in October finally gives way once the temperature drops hard.

Older panel profiles also don't always match what's sold off the shelf today. A lot of these homes have doors original or close to original to their build year, and finding an exact match for width, panel height, and texture takes more legwork than it would on a newer door.

What You Are Seeing

A damaged panel usually shows up one of three ways. First is a visible dent or crease, usually at bumper height or along the bottom panel where things get kicked or backed into. Second is a crack that runs through the panel, often starting at a seam or a hinge screw hole - this is the cold-weather failure pattern we see on older steel. Third is a panel that's pulled away from its hinge or roller bracket, which usually means the door was forced while something was already binding.

A single dented panel on an otherwise sound door is usually a straightforward swap - the door still opens and closes, it just looks bad and the dent can eventually stress the panel next to it. A cracked panel is more urgent, especially in winter, because the crack can spread with every open-close cycle and cold makes steel more brittle, not less. If a panel has come loose from its hardware, don't run the opener on it. That's a job to stop and call for, not one to cycle a few more times to see what happens.

What the Repair Takes

We start by matching the panel - manufacturer, panel height, section width, and finish. On homes built in the 1960s and 70s stock that makes up most of this area, that's often the hardest part of the job, not the install. If the original manufacturer still makes a comparable profile, we order the single section. If the door is old enough or obscure enough that no exact match exists, we'll tell you that up front rather than force a mismatched panel onto your door.

The swap itself: we disconnect the opener, support the door, pull the damaged section's hinges and rollers, set the new panel, and re-hang hardware. On a double-wide door with a damaged bottom panel, we check the section above it too, since a dent at the bottom often means an impact that stressed the panel seam just above it. We balance the door and check travel before we leave.

One honest limitation: if your door is old enough that the manufacturer discontinued that panel profile, a single-section match may not exist. At that point we'll talk through options rather than install something that doesn't fit right.

What It Costs

Panel replacement cost depends on whether we can source an exact match, how many sections are damaged, and whether hardware needs replacing along with the panel. We give you a number after we've looked at the door and identified the panel, not before - a quote over the phone on a door we haven't seen isn't reliable, and we'd rather be straight about that than guess.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace just one panel, or does the whole door have to come out?

Usually just the one panel, if we can match it. Sectional doors are built in individual panels for exactly this reason. Whole-door replacement only makes sense if the panel can't be matched or if several sections are damaged.

Why did my panel crack in the cold when the dent happened months ago?

Steel gets more brittle as it gets colder, and a dent often leaves a hidden stress crease. A door that took an impact in fall can develop a visible crack once a hard freeze hits, which is common in this area's severe cold winters.

My house is older - can you still find a matching panel?

Often, yes, but not always. A lot of homes in this area date to the 1960s and 70s, and some older panel profiles are no longer made. We check before we quote, and we'll tell you if an exact match isn't available.

Is a dented panel actually worth fixing, or should I replace the whole door?

If it's one panel on a door that otherwise opens, balances, and seals fine, a single-panel swap is usually the right call. If the door is old enough that hardware is failing too, a full replacement can make more sense - we'll tell you which situation you're in.
